This paper presents the contamination of surface and ground watersamples with respect to trace elements (Zn, Cu, Fe, Mn, Cd, Cr, Ni andPb) by industrial and domestic effluents. A total of 16 surface and eightground water samples were collected from NWFP while eight surface andfour ground water samples from Karachi (Sindh) and analyzed for traceelements concentration with the help of atomic absorptionspectrophotometer. The reported values of trace elements in surface andground waters were 0.04 and 0.13, 0.20 and 0.21, 0.19 and 0.16, 0.22 and1.22, 0.02 and 0.04, 0.04 and 0.14, 0.21 and 0.96, 0.16 and 0.33 mg L-1 forNWFP province while 0.16 and 0.26, 0.31 and 0.10, 0.78 and 1.22, 0.33 and0.10, 0.04 and 0.03, 0.10 and 0.03, 0.59 and 1.2, 0.19 and 0.15 mg L- 1 forSindh province for Zn, Cu, Fe, Mn, Cd, Cr, Ni and Pb, respectively. Theobserved values in this study were also compared with USEPA and WHOrecommended levels as well as with the concentrations reported by otherinvestigators. The comparison showed that the levels of selected traceelements were quite high and were within the range generally reportedfor contaminated surface and ground waters.
