Lead and cadmium content in the leaves with tops grown in the neighbourhood of the road with an intensive traffic

The investigations were carried out in 1994-96. The samples of sugar beet leaves with tops from 4 objects situated in the neighbourhood of Lublin-Warsaw (No 17) route (daily traffic - about 17000 vehicles) were taken at different distances (5, 50, 100, 150 and 200 m) from the road. Dry matter (DM), crude ash, lead and cadmium were determined. Both Pb and Cd contents in the leaves were the highest in the leaves of sugar beets grown in the direct neighbourhood of the route (3.1 and 0.96 mg/kg DM, respectively). The values decreased almost linearly with the distance from the road, and 200 m away they were 0.82 and 0.22 mg/kg DM, respectively. Generally, the Pb contents (even in the single samples) in the leaves were lower in comparison with the norms (10 mg/kg DM), whereas the Cd contents in the leaves from the direct neighbourhood of the route were twice as high in comparison with the norms. The cadmium content exceeded the critical level in the leaves of sugar beet grown up to 100 m away of the road
