Protein crops and organic farming in Denmark

To increase the protein production and improve the N-status of grain crop based organic farming systems a number of research programmes are being undertaken in Denmark. A part from pea various other pulses as faba bean, lentil and soybean and not least lupin are included. Also inter-cropping of these crops with cereals as spring barley and wheat is under investigation. Results indicate that especially varieties of narrow leaved lupin with restricted branching are potential for organic farming. Future for lupin and other protein crops will however largely depend on the development of the market for organic products not only in Denmark, but also on consumer demand on important export markets such as UK, Germany, USA and Japan
