Comparisons of overwintering, spring build up and honey yield in honeybee colonies kept in Wielkopolski and Dadant hives

Results of overwintering measured as the number of dead bees, spring build up estimated on the basis of 3 measurements of the brood area and honey yield expressed as the amount of the extracted honey were compared in honey bee colonies kept in Wielkopolski (in one box) and Dadant hives. The levels of V. jacobsoni and N. apis infestations were evaluated, whereas winter dead bees were examined. A lower number of the dead winter bees (22.5 percent) and higher area of the early spring brood (44 percent) was observed in the Wielkopolski hives, which had been overwintered as one box hive. Honey yield and the late spring brood build up was better in the Dadant hives (honey yield 9.6 percent). However, statistical analysis showed that the differences between 2 applied types of hives were insignificant. Variability of most of the traits was greater in the Wielkopolski hives. The levels of V. jacobsoni and N. apis infestations were very low. One could suppose that health status and proper management of the colonies affected more the overwintering results, spring build up and honey yield than the type of the hive
