Rice mutant slender (slr-1), which is characterized by rapid growth and long leaf sheath, was examined for gibberellin (GA) response and abscisic acid (ABA) biosynthesis. Slender rice, caused by a lethal and recessive single-gene mutation, was demonstrated to be a constitutive GA-response phenotype, and the mutant elongated as if saturated with GAs. In this mutant, elongation was unaffected by an inhibitor of GA biosynthesis, GA-inducible alpha-amylase was produced from the aleurone layer without GA3 application, and endogenous GA3 content was lower than in the wild-type plant. These results indicated that the product of the SLR gene is an intermediate pathway of the GA signal transduction process.
