Net blotch and leaf stripe of barley in Algeria: Incidence of pathogens, pathological diversity and resistance to Pyrenophora graminea and P. teres

In Algeria barley is one of the winter cereals that is cultivated extensively for animal feed and human consumption. Unfortunately production is characterized by low yield in the Maghreb region; losses caused by some barley foliar diseases are one of the major reasons for this. Research carried out in recent years in the various cereal production zones of the country showed the importance of barley leaf stripe (Pyrenophora graminea) and barley net blotch (P. teres). These pathogens are also present on seeds with contamination rates in the order of 10%. The average infection rate on growing crops is over 29%. Several pathological groups or physiological races of these two diseases have been identified in Algeria, with some of them presenting particularly high aggressivity. Screening of a large number of barley varieties and cultivated lines showed only a low level of resistance to leaf stripe and net blotch. No general sources of resistance were found within the plant material regularly grown in the Maghreb region. Further studies will be needed on both the plant material and the pathogens to develop a control approach based on the use of healthy seed, appropriate cultural practices, tolerant plant material and rational chemical control
