Screening of some insecticides for the control of insect pests of tomato

Leafminer, Liriomyza; whitefly, Bemesia tabaci; African bollworm, Helicopherpa armigera and pinworm, phthorimaea operculella are major insect pests on tomato throughout the Sudan. Four insecticides. Sesame 5 G, Malathion 57; EC and Danikool 20; EC were tested, at the Gezira Research Station Farm in season 2001-02 and 2002-03. Three doses from each insecticide plus the standard, a counterpart for Malathion 57; and the untreated control were tested. The crop was sprayed three times in the first season and four times in the second. The first spray in the first season and the first and second sprays of the second season were directed towards leafminer. The last two sprays in both seasons were directed towards the lepidopterist pests. No spray was targeted against whitefly. In case of leafminer, the post spray counts for all insecticides were much less than the initial counts in the two seasons. In both seasons the overall performance of post spray counts of all insecticides showed significant reduction in number of mines and percent infestation than the untreated control and were comparable to the standard treatment. Regarding yield, all insecticides except one gave higher yields than the untreated control whereas in the second season all insecticiddes (except one) had significantly higher yields than the untreated control. The Pests and Diseases Committee recommended: Sesame 5 G at the rate of 6.0 kg/fed. (300 g.a.i./fed.=0.43 g/hole), Mospilan 200 SL at the rate of 0.053 1/fed (10.6 g.a.i/fed.) and Malathion 57; EC at the rate of 2.0 1/fed. (1140 g.a.i./fed.) on tomato for the control of leafminer, Liriomyza sativae on tomato
