Japonica rice has a high potential for marketing in Japan. Temperature is generally known to be a major limitting factor of Japonica rice cultivation in Thailand. The influence of different planting date on growth and yield of Japonica rice under greenhouse was conducted in 1995-1996 at Khon Kaen Rice Research Station using Japonica rice var. Sasanichiki recommended by the Department of Agriculture. The four treatments of planting dates at October 15, November 15, December 15 and January 15 were arranged in randomized complete block design with four replications using 25-day-old seedling. Eight seedlings were transplanted at 20*20 cm spacing in the plot covering with the net to protect birds. The rice grain yield was highly significant effect by the different planting date. Japonica rice transplanted on January 15 provided the highest grain yield of 962 kg/rai which was correlated with the higher of leaf area index, total dry matter, field spikelet per panicle and 1,000 grain weight. However, planting rice at December 15 gave rice grain yield of 925 kg/rai which was not significantly different from January 15. Therefore, the suitable planting date of Japonica rice in Thailand was during the mid of December to the mid of January.
