Selection for fresh cucumber lines (Cucumis sativus L.)

Fresh cucumber lines were improved by 2 methods. Two generations of inbred line selection and one cycle of S1-selection were conducted between November 1997 to June 1998 at Lampang Agricultural Research and Training Centre, Lampang. In inbred line selection, rates of selection in the first and second filial were 1.0 and 1.9 percent, respectively. The second selected filial lines comprised 31 lines while the first cycle of S1-selection had resulted 19 selected lines. S1 trial had low epidemic of downy mildew outbreak but seriously infected by virus. All characters revealed varietal difference except for the bitterness. Seven lines were chosen for having high yield of over 1.9 tons/rai.
