Study on amount of water irrigation with mulching on soil moisture content and yield of plant on Kampangsean soil series (central region)

Experiment was conducted at Nakhonpathom Land Development Station during the year 1992. Furrow and drip irrigation were used to water the sweetcorn. The amount of water used were at plant PET, and lower and higher than PET of plant by 25 percent. The mulching materials were the transparent plastic, black plastic, and rice straw at the rate of 1 and 2 tons/rai. The results have shown that the plots with mulching materials produce higher corn yield than those with no mulching materials regardless of the type of irrigation. Among the mulching materials used rice straw at 2 tons/rai appeared to be the best for it brought about highest corn yield and soil moisture content. Black plastic was significantly more superior than the transparent one. Soil moisture content increased with the increase of water amount irrigated. However rice straw mulched at, 2 tons/rai resulted in more soil moisture content as compared to the plastic materials used. Beside drip irrigation applied at amount higher than plant PET by 25 percent cooperated with rice straw at 2 tons/rai also produce higher corn yield and soil moisture content than those obtained from plots applied with furrow irrigation cooperated with different soil mulching materials.
