Water use efficiency of soybean

Two field experiments were conducted at Chiang Mai Field Crops Research Center to study water use efficiency of soybean grown after rice under irrigated water supply. The first experiment was to investigate the effects of rice straw mulching and number of irrigations on yield and water use efficiency of soybean cv. CM60. It was found that rice straw mulching retarded soil water depletion at early growing period and increased grain yield and water use efficiency of the soybean. Grain yield decreased with the reduction of water supply. However, water use efficiency increased significantly when water was applied only at the critical growing stages compared to when water was applied at 10 day intervals. The second experiment was to compare grain yield and water use efficiency of 6 different soybean genotypes grown under different levels of water supply. The results indicated that there was a genotypic difference in adaptability to limited water conditions. Evern though grain yield decreased under limited water supply in all genotypes, cv. ST2 was more stable than the others due to its water use efficiency under limited water conditions.
