Utilization of water hyacinth in the form of containers

Fibre of water hyacinth was studied and utilized in the form of moulded pulp fruit tray instead of the synthetic packaging which is undegradable. Tapioca starch was used as binder because of its higher tensile strength, greater flexibility and cheapest starch products. The appropriate ratio between the amount of gel and pulp was studied. The ratio of 30 percent gel by weight gave the less shrinkage. Then the moulds of fruit tray was designed and fabricated from ABS plastic. The ratio of tapioca starch toward water was 1:1 which gave the less shrinkage. The comparative study between the pure water hyacinth fibre with out binder, corrugated paper, foam tray and paper fruit tray was run by puncture and 3 points bending tests. Results were showed that the sheet of pure water hyacinth fibre without binder gave the least puncture and 3 points bending tests of the 7.22 N/mm and 2.179 N/mm respectively. The corrugated paper gave the best puncture and 3 points bending tests of 20.71 N/mm and 12.74 N/mm respectively.
