Maize sheller improvement

For improvement of maize sheller for high moisture maize, two experiments were conducted to investigate machinery in practical use and to survey effect of each factor of shelling schemes. Following above results, several types of shelling cylinders were selected or improved and tested. In 1990, four types of shelling cylinder; plate tooth with cage cylinder (P-C), spike tooth with five bar cage (S-C), spike tooth with drum cylinder (S-D) and square tooth with drum cylinder (Sq-D) were tested. Ratio of breakage increased as kernel moisture content increased. It was also increased as peripheral speed of shelling tooth was increased except at high moisture content. Effect of cylinder types on ratio of breakage is not clear. However, the P-C cylinder showed the lowest ratio of unshelled kernel. Power consumption of the P-C type is significantly higher than other spike tooth type cylinders. Breakage at 30 percent moisture content is specially higher than at other moisture contents. In 1991's experiment, P-C, S-C and the other two cylinders, mixed tooth with 4 bars (M-4) and mixed tooth with 5 bars (M-5) were examined. Ratio of breakage increased as moisture content or peripheral speed of shelling cylinder increased specially at lower levels. However, it did not show significant difference among types of cylinders. M-4 and M-5 showed the lowest unshelled kernel ratio and were followed by P-C and S-C respectively. However, the cylinders resulting low unshelled kernel ratio showed higher power consumption.
