Effect of hight dietary fiber diet on nutritional evaluation in rats

Comparative effects of 6 different high dietary fiber diets and casein diet on protein evaluation (protein efficiency ratio : PER, net protein utilization : NPU, biological value : BV and digestibility : D) were investigated by feeding male Sprague-Dawley rats with diets containing unpolished rice, mung bean, sweet corn, nata de coco, milk powder, sugar (formula 1); pumpkin, mung bean, unpolished rice, nata de coco, milk powder, sugar (formula 3); oat, sweetpotato, kidney bean, nata de coco, milk powder, sugar (formula 5): formula 2, 4, 6 containing the same as formula 1, 3, 5 but without milk powder, sugar. Six experimental diets and control diet (casein) were prepared from 6 formulas by AOAC, contained test protein 10+-0.3 percent, oil 8 percent water 5 percent mineral 5 percent, vitamin 1 percent, cellulose 1 percent, sucrose 35 percent, corn starch 35 percent and different dietary fiber. Diet 6 showed the highest content of feces 62.89 g whereas casein diet (diet 7) showed the lowest content of feces 17.18 percent g other group showed weight of feces 32.39-47.12 g. Each group (diet 1-diet 6) compared with control diet (casein) showed statistical significant difference (P0.05). Total dietary fiber in diet 6 was the highest 20.01 percent but casein diet was the lowest 6.58 percent whereas diet 1-5 were 8-41-13.22 percent. The value of PER in diet 1-7 were 2.44, 1.89, 2.29, 1.66, 2.25, 1.88 and 2.50 whereas NPU, D of diet 6 showed the lowest value 63.81, 70.05 respectively. The range of NPU, D in diet 1-7 were 63.81-77.45, 70.05-95.52, NPU and D in casein group showed the highest value 77.45, 95.52 respectively. The range of BV in diet 1-7 were 80.29-91.76. The results indicate that the highest dietary fiber diet showed the highest content of feces and decreased the value of NPU and D.
