Cover crops for herbicide replacement in no-tillage corn (Zea mays)

Experiment on cover crops for herbicide replacement in no-tillage corn (Zea mays) was carried out at the National Corn and Sorghum Research Center, Pakchong district, Nakhon Ratchasima province, to study on 4 cover crops bio-mass and their potential to replace herbicide in controlling weed. The experiment laid out in split plot design, 3 replications with the cover crops assigned as 6 main plots including lablab bean, mimosa, jack, bean, velvet bean, no cover crop/no-till and no cover crop/tillage. Four sub plots were herbicide application methods; pre-emergence (pre), post-emergence (post.), pre emergence follow by post-emergence (pre fb post) and untreated. The result revealed that jack bean and velvet bean grew very fast and covered full area within I month which gave the highest bio-mass, as well. It was found that 4 cover crops could reduce many kinds of weed, and grass weeds were suppressed more than nutsedge and broad leaf weed. Application of pre. and pre. fb post which gave less dry weight of weeds than post revealed better control. Concerning about yield and yield components of corn, 4 cover crops did not affect on both yield and yield components. However, corn plant height of pre. treatment at 6 WAP to larvest was shorter than other treatments.
