The ACIAR programme in Zimbabwe began in 1984 as a joint response by the Zimbabwean and Australian governments to increasing deforestation in Zimbabwe. Several international re-afforestation programmes have identified the lack of alternative species as a serious constraint to their programmes. The main thrust of the ACIAR programme has therefore been aimed at testing the Introduction of a wide range of previously little-known Australian species into Zimbabwe. Subsidiary programmes have also tested species from other parts of the world (Including Zimbabwe). Methodologies for climatic matching and for data capture and analysis have also been developed and applied. International co-operation and development has been encouraged through regular workshops and training programmes for ACIAR participants In Zimbabwe, Kenya, Thailand, China and Australia.
