Makuku, S. J. | Piearce, G. D. | Gumbo, D. J.
Based on a study of Norumedzo community in Bikita, this paper reveals the importance of traditional institutions, those of chieftaincies and kraalheadships, in maintaining and instituting local laws about management and sharing of common property resources. In most parts of the country where these institutions have lost authority to administer over issues of land and resources in general due to the installation of government-designed institutions, Village Development Committees (VIDCOs)and Ward Development Committees (WADCOs), communal resources have been relegated from more sustainable management systems under the former to unsustainable management approaches under the latter. The Norumedzo community serves as a living example of how traditiona leaderships can foster sustainable regimes for management of rural "comnmons".
