Passive transfer of colostral immunoglobulins in calves and appearance of gastroenteritis

The objective of the study was to determine if there was a relationship between availability of colostrum immunoglobulins in cows and the degree of passive immunozation after colostrum feeding in their calves. Fourty six clinically healthy newborn calves has been investigated from birth to 30 days of age. Twenty six calves (1 gr) were fed colostrum with high level of total protein and immunoglobulins and 20 caslves (2 gr) had received colostrum with low level of total protein and immunoglobulins. At 24 h of age, calves in 1 gr had significantly higher serum protein, gammaglobulins and immunoglobulins than calves in 2 gr. It was established failure of passive transfer in 70% of calves (2 gr). In this group mortality and morbidity were higher - 55% and 5 % respectively compare with calves from 2 gr. Results suggest that total protein and IgGl shortly after birth may have important progestic value in evaluating risk of calf gastroenteritis.
