The aim of the present survey was to evaluate the investments for fattening pig barns in Switzerland based on realized objects. The investments were analyzed on 24 objects built between 1997 und 2004 with an average capacity of 372 fattening pigs (FP) (200 to 800 FP). The capital cost was evaluated based on the construction bills. The own labour of the farmers was estimated. The average capitals were Fr. 1'429.- per FP (Fr. 648.- to Fr. 1'968.-). The total investments (capital plus own labor) were Fr. 1'575.- per FP (Fr. 794.- to Fr. 2'372.-). Constructed slurry pit volume varied from 0,15 m3 to 4,19 m3 pro FP. Therefore, the projects were standardized to a slurry pit volume of 1,4 m3 (correction factor: Fr. 191.- per m3). Die standardized total investment averaged Fr. 1'528.- per FP (Fr. 1'032.- to Fr. 2'003.-).
