Phytoplankton of the Gruza water reservoir is characterized by the presence of cosmopolitan species of algae of the divisions Cyanophyta, Bacillariophyta, Pyrrophyta, Chrysophyta, Euglenophyta, and Chlorophyta. In regard to the number of species, algae of the divisions Chlorophyta and Bacillariophyta are dominant. A clear seasonal succession is discernible in both the qualitative and the quantitative presence of phytoplankton in the given water reservoir. The number of species increases from the colder to the warmer period of the year, the greatest value of this index occurring in late summer (August). With respect to the number of species and absolute abundance, Bacillariophyta are dominant in the colder periods of the year (March and November), whereas Chlorophyta and Cyanophyta are dominant during the summer months. High primary production throught the whole year with a pronounced peak during the summer (when algal blooms caused by the blue-green alga Aphanisomenon flos-aquae are observed) indicates the eutrophic status of the Gruza water reservoir.
