This paper presents the results of ex situ conservation of genetic resources of two elm species known to be susceptible to Dutch Elm Disease (DED) field elm (Ulmus minor Mill.) and European white elm (Ulmus laevis Pall.), although the latter one is more seriously threatened by the destruction of the natural habitats. Plant material from 9 native trees of field elm from Sremska Mitrovica, Serbia (Serbia and Montenegro) and 10 native trees of white elm from Backa Palanka, Serbia (Serbia and Montenegro) was collected for production of clones through tissue culture. Clones will be used for establishment of the field genebank at the Experimental Estate of the Institute of Lowland Forestry and Environment, Faculty of Agriculture, Novi Sad (Serbia and Montenegro). They will be planted in low hedges, which are unattractive for elm bark beetle (Scotylus sp.) - vector of the disease.
