Characteristics of lateral blooming and lateral fertility of walnut trees

The proportion of lateral blooming and lateral fertility in local walnut population was analysed. Lateral blooming was observed on 226, or 15.4% of the trees in a walnut population in Timocka Krajina, Serbia (Serbia and Montenegro), and lateral fertility only on 12 trees or 5.3% or 0.8% of the total number of trees in the population. Fruits developing from lateral flowers have lower mass, kernel content and oil content than the population average. Lateral blooming after late spring frosts is also described.
