Hottonia palustris L. is a rare species which faces the risk of extinction in the nearest future. In the Vojvodina Province, Serbia (Serbia and Montenegro), this submersed and rooted vascular macrophyta has been reported to inhabit a small number of locations in the regions of Backa and Srem. It reacts to the changes of the environment sooner than the other species, which makes is a most sensitive bioindicator in aquatic ecosystems. Biochemical analyses (Kovilj-Petrovaradin swamp, 2002) showed that the water-violet suffered an oxidative stress due to unfavourable environmental factors, as indicated by the increased production of superoxide radicals, low activity of antioxidant enzymes and low content of reduced glutathione.
