The effect of different fertilizer rates and application methods on the yield of some potato varieties grown on the calcareous soil of favourable physical and somewhat poorer chemical properties under agroecological conditions of the mountain range Radocelo (slopes of Mt. Golija, 1300 m altitude), Serbia, was observed in the present study. The stationary trial was set up in 2003 and 2004 and potato varieties Adora, Cleopatra, Lisetta and Condor were planted. Two mineral fertilizer rates were applied: 1) N200P120K150 and 2) N160P120K120 by two different methods. One half of the first rate was applied in autumn during autumn deep ploughing, and the other half during the seed-bed preparation in spring. One half of the second rate was added during seed-bed preparation, and the other half was applied as a starter fertilizer at planting. The obtained results show that the rational use of lower mineral fertilizer rate, half of which were applied during the seed-bed preparation and the other half as a starter, had the best effect in the varieties Cleopatra, Lisetta and Condor. A higher mineral fertilizer rate, half of which was used in autumn and the other half during the seed-bed preparation, significantly increased the yield of the variety Adora. The highest yield in the trial was recorded in varieties Lisetta and Condor.
