Among vegetable and spice plant seeds of different species and cultivars commercially available the presence of Alternaria alternata was established in 58 samples out of 87 investigated. The highest level of infestation of investigated seed (more than 80%) was established in one sample of beans, string beans, parsley and coriander, each, while a little level of infestation (50-80%) was present on one sample of onion, parsley, and fennel, each. Seed infestation that was less than 10% occurred on 26 samples. On 29 seed samples Alternaria alternata was not present. A seed infection level higher than 50% was established on two samples: coriander (98%) and parsley (96%). In 12 samples level of seed infection varied from 10 to 50%, while in 19 samples it was lower than 10%. In 53 seed samples infection was not confirmed. A high level of seed infestation and infection of different vegetable and spice plants commercially available in our country, suggests that this problem should be taken more seriously, considering the importance of seed transmission in the epidemiology of the disease caused by Alternaria alternata.
