Phytoplankton biomass and nutrients dynamics as trophic level indicators in the inner part of Boka Kotorska Bay [Adriatic sea, Montenegro]. [Doctoral dissertation]

Krivokapic, S.
During the period from September 2003 to August 2004, nutrients and chlorophyll a concentrations, as indicators of the trophic level were analysed in five sampling locations in the inner part of Boka Kotorska Bay (Adriatic sea), Montenegro. The analyzed parameters varied both in space and time. In the course of the investigation a positive linear correlation of salinity and the concentration of Na, Ca, Mg, and Pb in the seawater occurred. A positive correlation was determined in the relation of chlorophyll a and the concentration of Cu in phytoplankton, while in the relation of chlorophyll a and the concentration of Na, Ca, Mg, Zn, and Ni, the correlation was negative. The maximum value of phytoplankton biomass as represented by chlorophyll a occurred in December and ranged from 5.07 mg/cubic meter to 6.47 mg/cubic meter. The investigation showed a positive correlation of chlorophyll a with diluted oxygen, nitrates and silicates, and negative with temperature, salinity, transparency and nitrates. According to the INEP (1994) criteria during the investigated period it can be concluded that the area in question is mesotrophic with exception of December when it is eutrophic.
