Identification of Xanthomonas campestris pv. phaseoli (Smith 1897) Dye 1978 b, using conventional, serological and molecular methods

Samples of bean plants showing necrotic leaf spots and sunken spots filled with ooze on bean pods were collected from several localities in Serbia during 2003 and 2004 and bacteria were isolated. In order to identify the isolated bacteria, their pathogenic, morphological, cultural, biochemical and physiological characteristics were studied. Based on the results of these studies, it was determined that the investigated strains belonging to Xanthomonas campestris pv. phaseoli, the causal agent of common blight of beans. This is the first report on the application of molecular methods for the identification of X.c.pv. phaseoli, the causal agent of common blight of beans, in Serbia.
