The aim of the study was to evaluate arsenic concentrations in muscles, liver, kidneys and gonads of 2 fish species caught in different localities of the river Elbe and its tributary the river Vltava in 1999, 2002 and 2003, and in pools of the river Elbe in 2000. A total of 118 bream and 151 perch were examined by AAS. The highest As concentrations in muscles were found in bream from the locality Zelcin in 2003 (0.17 mg/kg) and in perch in 2002 (0.084 mg/kg). The highest As concentrations in perch were found in the kidneys, followed by the liver, milt, muscles and eggs. An increase (P less than 0.01) in As concentrations in 2003 (after floods) compared with 2002 was found in bream muscles in Zelcin and in perch muscles in Podoli; a significant decrease in As concentrations was demonstrated in perch muscles in Verdek, Nemcice, Hrensko and in bream muscles in Hrensko. The contamination in the studied localities does not pose a major health risk.
