Milk yield and economic evaluation of two concentrate feeds to crossbred Boran x Friesian (BF) and Boran Jersey (BJ) dairy cows at Holetta Research Center

A feeding trial was conducted using twenty four 50% Friesian - Boran and Jersey - Boran crossbred cows in a factorial pattern of Randomized completely block design to evaluate the supplementary values of two concentrate mixed (concentrate mix 1/treatment which, formulated at the center and concentrate mix 2/treatment 2 which, purchased as a mix) on milk yield performance and profitability of milk production. There was no significant difference (P=0.055) between concentrate mix 1 and concentrate mix 2 on milk yield (7.4 L±0.05 and 7.5 L±0.06) respectively provided that breed difference is not taken into account. When breed difference is considered, there was highly significant difference (P=0.0001) between the two concentrate supplements. i.e., supplementing BF cows with CM1 (7.4±0.07). This in turn was better than supplementing BJ cows with CM2 (7.2 L±0.09). With regard to feed intake, a significant difference (P=0.042) was shown on the effect of treatments on hay intake (HYIT). Cows fed treatment 1 (CM1) and treatment 2 (CM2) have consumed 7.4kg±0.07 and 7.2kg±0.08kg hay respectively. However, a non-significant difference (P=0.218) was observed with respect to the effect of treatments on TOFDIT (total feed intake). Cows fed treatment 1 and treatment 2 have consumed a total feed of 11.1kg±0.08 and 10.9kg±0.09 respectively.
