Alternative energy technologies for rural development in Ethiopia
2003
Yacob Mulugeta(Centre for Environmental Strategy (UK). University of Surrey)
This chapter reviews the principal elements of a sustainable energy strategy with a view to identifying and commenting on the potential impact of alternative technologies and approaches for sustaining livelihoods. The chapter begins with a discussion of what the alternative energy approach means in the Ethiopian context as a way of achieving a clear and precise understanding of the energy-poverty nexus in the country. It then reviews some key renewable energy technologies that hold promise in the Ethiopian reality, emphasizing the necessary technical interventions at the end user level. The third and final section sets out the premise that technology alone is not sufficient to guarantee lasting service, since the very notion of sustainability of service incorporates non-technical criteria as measures of success.
