Breeding for modified fatty acid composition in gomenzer (Brassica carinata Braun)

Gomenzer (rassica carinata Braun) is a high yielding oilseed crop adapted in the Ethiopian highlands. The seed from gomenzer contains 42% oil with 35 to 40% of the undesirable erucic acid. Therefore, a breeding program was designed to develop gomenzer lines containing 1% erucic acid B. carinata with zero erucic acid B. juncea. Seeds containing 1% erucic acid in their oil were selected at BC sub(1) F sub(2) generation. Zero erucic acid gomenzer plants were developed using backcrossing to B. Carinata cv. Dodolla with reselection for zero erucic acid trait at every generation using half seed technique. The zero erucic acid plants contain 6% palmitic, 28% oleic, 38% linoliec, 23% linolenic, 0.5% eicosenoic and 0.5% erucic acids in their oil. The erucic acid trait in B. carinata is controlled by two additive genes at two loci.
