Effects of seed bed preparation, seed rate, seed covering and weeding frequency on seed yield and other characters of linseed at Adet northwestern Ethiopia

Linseed is one of the major oilseed crops in North Western Ethiopia. Under farmers' conditions, however, productivity is very low. An experiment was conducted in 1994 and 1995 cropping seasons on the Nitosols of Adet Research Center to determine optimum combinations of frequency of seed bed preparation, seed rate, method of seed covering and weeding frequency for linseed production at Adet and its vicinity. Significant difference (P0.01) in seed yield was observed on the combinations of seed rate and weeding frequency in both years. The highest seed yield 878.9 kg/ha in 1994 and 1637. 2 kg/ha in 1995 was obtained with the seed rate of 40 kg/ha and twice weeding which is a yield advantage of 528.1 kg (1994) and 1222.1 kg (1995) over the 30 kg/ha seed rate of unweeded plots. Interactive effects of seed rate, weeding frequency, frequency of plowing and method of seed covering on seed yield were significant (P0.05) in 1994 but not in 1995. Three-way interaction of frequency of plowing, seed rate and weeding frequency, however, was significant (P0.05) in both years. The highest-combined seed yield (1358.7 kg/ha) was obtained with the combination of twice plowing, seed rate of 40 kg/ha and twice weeding. Overall, the highest seed yield 1418.1 kg/ha was obtained on combinations of seed bed prepared twice. Seeds covered using local plow, seed rate of 40 kg/ha and weeded twice followed by 1412.5 kg/ha on the same treatment combination but at seed rate of 50 kg/ha and weeded once. Thousand seed weight, seeds and bolls per plant were significantly (P0.01) affected by the interaction of seed rate and weeding frequency.
