A field experiment was conducted at Abobo Research Center to study the extent of phenotypic and genotypic variability. Thirty-four cowpea entries were planted in single row of 4 meters long in randomised complete block design with three replications. Different characters were considered and standard statistical calculations and procedures were also used. Phenotypic and genotypic variances were more or less closer in all cases. Number of seeds per plant, yield per pod, plant height peduncle length, number of branches per plant, 100-seed weight and pod length showed high to moderate phenotypic and genotypic coefficient of variation values in order of magnitude. This will help to exploit the potential of existing variety in breeding program.
