The purpose of this study was to investigate the feeding responses to the stimulant, sucrose, myo-inositol, and CaCO3, in the newly hatched larvae of mutant strains, called " polyphagous" strains, of the silkworm, Bombyx mod Five "polyphagous"strains of silkworm,"Hitachi","Nilski","Nich-603-go","Chu-604-go",'Sawa-J", and a normal strain,"Asa.hi x To.Kai", as a control were used for the experiments. Each or paired test compounds were added to the basal diet consisting of cellulose powder, agar, and distilled water. The diet thus prepared was given to the newly hatched larvae of the silkworm. Fifty larvae, which derived from eggs of the same maternal moth, were assigned to each test group, and the experiment was repeated ten times with the eggs often moths. After rearing the larvae on the diet at 25 deg C In the dark for 72 h, the preference of larvae to the stimulant (or paired stimulants) in the diet was estimated by the number of feces excreted. All the tested larvae fed on the diets, and each diet consumption was much greater in the five "polyphagous" strains than in the normal strain. It was found that "polyphagous" strains could show strong responses to the feeding of the test compounds. Institute of Sericulture, likura 1053, Ami-machi, Ibaraki, 300-0324 JAPAN.
