Relation between new shoot growth of first flush and accumulated temperature in tea [Camellia sinensis] major cultivar 'Yabukita'

In this study, the relation between new shoot growth of first flush and accumulated temperature was investigated using the daily mean temperatures (median of maximum temperature and minimum temperature) and the growth investigation data which were taken in tea major cultivar 'Yabukita' during 1989-2000, to establish simple methods of new shoot growth estimation by accumulated temperature. 1. When the accumulated temperature was calculated from March 10th to sprouting time of first flush, its range was from 226.5 to 275.5 deg C and smaller than any others, and the average of the accumulated temperature was 256.5 deg C. Also, the temperature accumulated from sprouting time of first flush to plucking time was seen at 360.3 to 479.0 deg C and its distribution was rather wide than the distribution of the temperature accumulated from March 10th to sprouting time. 2. Number of opened leaves was more strongly related to the temperature accumulated from sprouting time than length of new shoot and rate of banjhi shoot And, the regression equation which was given Y= 0.011X-0.8522 where Y of object variable was number of opened leaves and X of explanatory variable was the temperature accumulated from sprouting time was obtained. A comparison between the values estimated by the regression equation and the actually investigated values was made in five tea fields which differed each other in new shoot growth. The estimated values was approximately identical with the actually investigated values, excluding the case of deeply skiffing such as medium pruning and the case that rate of banjhi shoot had exceeded 90%.
