Synchronization of the estrous cycle in sows using a controlled intravaginal drug release device

The aim of this study was conducted to clarify the possibility of synchronization of estrus cycle in sows using a progesterone releasing intravaginal device for goat and sheep (CIDR-G device). Thirty-four Landrace sows were randomly divided into two groups: CIDR group (n= 18) and PG group (n=16). In CIDR group, CIDR-B device was inserted into vagina regardless of the estrus cycle, and removed on day 7 (day 0 : the day of insertion). CIDR-G treated sows were injected intramuscularly with 0.2625 mg of Cloprostenol (PG) immediately after removal of CIDR-G device. In PG group, sows were injected intramuscularly with 0.2625 mg of PG. Estrus rate of sows tended to be higher in CIDR group than in PG group (72% vs. 44%, P=0.09). However, there was no significant difference in the number of recovered oocytes, recovered embryos, and piglets between CIDR group and PG group. It is suggested that CIDR-G device treatment is effective in synchronization of estrus cycle in sows.
