A composting plant located in Gifu and built in 1999, in which garbage and animal waste are used as materials, was selected for the present experiment. The plant has been run as a system in which emission of odorous gasses is minimized, because it lies in the area close to a park. The average amount of materials, 4.9t, is collected daily, of which 63.7% is animal waste from poultry farms and 25.2% is garbage from schools. Compost production is, in weight, about half of materials used. The fermentation facilities are sealed with a vinyl sheet and ventilated with a blower to avoid accumulation of odorants. The contaminated air is then transported to the deodorization facilities (sulfuric acid scrubber device and biological deodorization tank). The blower has a sucking power of 227 cubic m per minute and allows air in the fermentation facilities to be changed 7.2 times per hour. Density of main odorants in inlet air and outlet air of the deodorization facilities was measured. Ammonia was removed by 97.2% after the deodorization, but sulfur odorants remained almost unaltered. Thus, the deodorization efficiency was given as 43.5%. The biological deodorization. which not provided proper operating conditions, may account for the low efficiency. Fertilizer value of wastewater, which was discharged at 500L daily by flushing the contaminated air with sulfuric acid, was evaluated. The pH was 4.2, nitrogen content was 77.5g/L (355.5g/L as ammonium sulfate) and specific gravity was 1.169. The wastewater was found to be used as a nitrogen fertilizer. It was also found that the nitrogen content (y) can be estimated from the specific gravity (x), using the regression line between the two variables, y=514.1x-525.5.
