Yuko IDOTA : The current situation of forest management and problems in Kawakami-mura. Nara, Japan: Analysis of the results of a questionnaire survey to the forest owners. Jpn. J. For. Plann. 38 : 47-60, 2004 In the Yoshino forestry area, the forest has been managed by a characteristic historically developed management form which relies on the Yamamori, literally meaning 'guardian of the forest'. Due to the low wood price in this region, the business environment has made it difficult for the forest owners and Yamamori to continue this system. However, sustainable management of the artificial forests in this region is important since they now occupy 67% of the forests. The purpose of the present study was to analyze the current situation of forest ownership and management and to clarify the consciousness of the forest owners to identify the current situation of Yamamori. The results of the survey showed that three fourths of the forest owners were now managing the forests using Yamamori, and 29% of the owners desired future management by the forestry association. This was due to the aging of the Yamamori, pursuit of a side-business, lack of successors, and consequent decline in the forest managing ability.
