Detection of Giardia from river water and goat feces

In August 2002, Giardia cyst was detected from Toyogawa river water in the east Mikawa area of Aichi Prefecture. We also investigate the actual condition regarding with an invasion of Giardia in domestic animal. The cysts were detected from the feces of goats (21/34, 62%) bred in the upper area of the river. In the Giardia positive specimen of 21 goats, 9 (43%) had over 500 cysts per 1 gram, resulting maximum number of 3,400 cyst.
