Improvement of the properties of gypsum particleboard by adding a mixture of jute and polypropylene fibers

For enhancing the properties of gypsum particleboard (GPB) by adding reinforcing fiber materials, this paper examines the influence of adding jute (Corchorus spp.) and polypropylene (PP) fibers, whose beneficial effects have been demonstrated in previous studies, on the physical and mechanical properties of GPB. Two kinds of fiber with four lengths ranging from 3 to 12 mm were used for the test First, six fiber contents of 3 to 18% based on the weight of wood particles were mixed in the GPB (wood/gypsum ratio: 0.25) in the same ratio and tested. Then the ratio of jute and PP fibers added was changed to examine its influence on the properties of GPB made under the four conditions and to identify the most effective enhancement. The addition of both jute and PP fibers of 3 mm length in the same ratio had a marked effect on the internal bond strength (IB) of boards at 6 % content The modulus of rupture (MOR) and elasticity (MOE) in bending also showed the greatest values at or around the same ratio at 6 % content. In addition, the thickness swelling (TS) and water absorption (WA) of boards were greatly reduced by mixing fibers at the same factors of board production. In conclusion, the addition of both jute and PP fibers of approximately the same amount at 6 % content improved the properties of GPB and conferred high performance, surpassing the properties of boards made with adding either fiber alone.
