The rice-producing district down the valley of China CHANG JIANG has recently the following characteristics of the rice production and distribution. Firstly, in that rice-producing district, early variety of rice (indica type rice) has been decreasing and middle (of early and late) maturing rice Japonica type rice) has been increasing. Especially, JIANG SI changed rapidly from indica type rice production to japonica type rice production and consumption in 1990ages. Secondly, however its changing of rice variety has not spread throughout the rice-producing district of the southern CHlNA. For example, Middle maturing rice in HUNAN and JIANGXI is indica type rice, and both districts still have not the trend to increasing the japonica type rice production and consumption. Thirdly, in 1980'ages, indica type rice breeds had developed rapidly in southern China, and hybrid rice has spread in the indica type rice-producing center such as HUNAN and JIANGXI. Lastly, recent changing of the rice variety structure is promoted by the policy of deregulating food-selling obligation.
