Distribution patterns, limiting factors for habitat and genetic diversity of an epiphytic orchid, Dendrobium moniliforme (L.) Sw. occurring on the Cedar-lined Old Nikko Road were investigated. Clump size and number of D. moniliforme on a branch of each Cryptomeria japonica tree were scored for the whole Old Nikko Road composed of the Nikko Road, the Reiheishi Road and the Aizu-nishi Road; and a distribution map was made. The map showed that D. moniliforme thrived most densely around the Reiheishi Road, while the least on the Nikko Road near at Moritomo. Light availability as well as cedar tree density were suggested to be most significant factors affecting on an optimal growth condition for D. moniliforme. A UPGMA dendrogram based on RAPD data showed two principal clusters differing each other with genetic variability.
