Studies on the effective use of wild grasses

There are rich wild grasses on the bank of the Simanto River. These grasses are being cut and burned regulary to maintain the land scape. These garasses grow naturally even if no one scatter agricultural chemicals and artificial manure. So we want to use the grasses effectively for feed of cattle. In this reserch we examined the utilization of the wild grasses with wrapped round bale silage. We used the grasses found along the bank of the Shimanto River and at Kochi Prefectural Livestock Experiment Station. The wild grasses on the bank are generally dry. Only 10% moisture content is left a day after cutting. As for dry matter nutiritive value, it has 2.3% DCP (digestible crude protein) and 50.9% TDN(total digestible nuturients). This value is less than what is provided by field grass. The cost of hay used in this reserch is 50yen per kilogram TDN. Moisuture content of wild grasses at Kochi Prifectural Livestock Experiment Station ranges from 73.6 11 A% in summer and 60.5 ~ 66.0% in fall. In summer wrapped round bale silage of good quality can be produced after one or two days of drying. In fall drying is not necessary. This material has 7.3% DCP,58.8% TDN comparable to that of guineagrass regrowth. Such moisture content is suitable for the production of deliciously fermented wrapped round bale silage.
