Secretion of prolactin, luteinizing hormone and estradiol-17beta immediately after interruption of incubating behavior in Gifujidori hens

Plasma concentrations of prolactin (PRL), luteinizing hormone (LH) and estradiol- 17 beta (E2) were measured by using radioimmunoassay (for PRL and LH) and time-resolved fluoroimmunoassay (for E2) in Gifujidori hens during a period of 6 h after interruption of incubation behavior on day 3 and day 21 of incubation by transferring the hens to another cage that was not equipped with a nest. The plasma level of PRL decreased at 2 h after the interruption of incubation, and this decrease continued up to 6 h on both day 3 and day 21. The rate of decrease was greater in hens whose incubation was interrupted on day 21 than in hens whose incubation was interrupted on day 3. In contrast to the change in the plasma level of PRL, the plasma level of LH increased at 6 h after the interruption; however, the increase was not very remarkable when the interruption was induced on day 3 of incubation as compared to the interruption induced on day 21. With regard to the plasma level of E2, an appreciable increase was not observed when the incubation was interrupted on day 3; however, a little increase was observed when the incubation was interrupted on day 21. The results of the present study indicate that the plasma levels of PRL, LH and E2 measured immediately after the interruption of incubation behavior differ between the hens whose incubation was interrupted on day 3 and the hens whose incubation was interrupted on day 21 . The reason behind this difference is unknown and remains to be investigated.
