A bacterial post-harvest disease on scaly bulbs of Allium giganteum was occurred in October 1998. The affected bulbs showed black colored lesions, soft rot and finally dry rot. Seven strains isolated from diseased bulbs were induced original symptoms on bulbs of A. giganteum, and yellowish white rot on scales of onion by artificial inoculation. The causal agent was identified as Erwinia ananas (=Pantoea ananatis) on the basis of its bacteriological characteristics. This is the first report of bacterial disease of A. giganteum caused by E. ananas (P. ananatis) in Japan. We propose the disease name as bacterial rot of ornamental allium plant. Leaf blight, corm and neck rot on Belamcanda chinensis were found in June 1999. At first, a small water-soaked lesions and then brown lesions appeared on leaves. The plant growth was declined with yellowing of leaves. Aphonomyces sp. was isolated from diseased plants and induced same symptoms as original to healthy plants 2-3 weeks after inoculation. These isolates didn't affect Iris hollandica, Spinacia oleracea, Chenopodium amaranticolor, Pisum sativum, Brassica campestris, Raphanus sativus, Solanum melongena, Lycopersicon esculentum and Tulipa gesneriana. The morphological characteristics of causal agent were similar to A. iridis but the infectivity was different from A. iridis.
