'Goropikari' is the main paddy rice cultivar in double cropping paddy fields in Gunma Prefecture. From the diagnosis of its growth we determined the amount of top-dressing that could increase yield without raising the protein content, which is an index of eating quality. The protein value could be explained by a multiple regression model using leaf color value (LC) x plant length value (PL) and amount of top-dressing applied 40 days after transplantation. This model was valid for different soil types, soil fertility, and number of seedlings per hill. By combining LC x PL and the 7% protein value which is recommended in Gunma Prefecture, we calculated the amount of additional top-dressing to keep low than 7% protein value. In addition, LC x PL and yield were correlated. This method of calculating top-dressing amount can keep both yield and eating quality of rice.
