1. "Yukinomai" is a low amylose content new cultivar which selected from the progeny of cross between "Sho 1658" and "Yamagata63". Crossing was preformed at the Shonai Branch Yamagata Prefectural Experiment Station in 1995. 2. The practical characteristics of "Yukinomai" are as follows. (1) The heading and maturity date is 1 day later than "Hananomai", and is classified as early in the Yamagata Prefecture. (2) The culm length is shorter and the plant type is the moderate type. Its lodging resistance is strong. (3) The true resistance genes of blast is "Pii", and field resistance to leaf blast is slightly high and field resistance to panicle blast is low. (4) The cold tolerance is very strong the same as "Hananomai". (5) The yielding ability is lower than "Hananomai". (6) The quality of brown rice is worse than "Hananomai". (7) The eating quality is as good as that of "Haenuki". Cooking rice is sticky and rice cake smell is little. It is specially suitable for rice ball. (8) "Yukinomai" has a very small change of the amylase content by temperature change during the ripening stage as much as a staple cultivar. (9) "Yukinomai" has new low amylase genetic resources which are considered to originate in the anther culture. Sequence of the Wx-y gene revealed that one base change existed within cording region and carrying out amino acid substitution. 3. "Yukinomai" will be adapted to the paddy fields among the mountains and middle mountains in Yamagata prefecture.
