The effect of rice bran on the growth of barnyard grass (Echinochloa crus-galli (L.) Beauv. var. formosensis Ohwi) seedlings was studied. Comparison was made between the effect of powder and the pellet formulation treatments under paddy field and Wagner pots conditions as well as in beakers in a growth chamber. Changes in oxidation reduction potential, dissolved oxygen content, electric conductivity and pH in paddy water were determined. Under all growth conditions, both the powder and phllet formulation remarkably inhibited the germination and seedling growth of barnyardgrass. In the mesocotyl, abnormal elongation was also induced by the treatments of powder and pellet formulation. The degree of inhibition was similar for both formulations. Oxidation-reduction potential and dissolved oxygen content was remarkably decreased which may be a main factor in the suppressive activity on barnyardgrass growth in the paddy water in the growth conditions. Changes in electric conductivity and pH were observed to have little inhibitory effect on barnyardgrass growth. These results suggested that the decrease in oxidation reduction potential and dissolved oxygen content in paddy water due to rice bran treatment were the primary factors inducing the inhibition of seedling growth of barnyardgrass.
