Economic development and water problems in China: A case study on water environmental problems of Beijing City

There are about eighty rivers and five catchments in Beijing City. In addition, dozens of dams including Miyun dam, Guanting dam, sluices and aqueduct canals have also been built. However, some water problems still appear to be serious such as water resource shortage and water pollution. Based on the present situations of these problems in this city, this paper analyzed the factors bringing about the waiter crisis, the legislations and the countermeasures carried out by local government against to water resource shortage and water pollution. Meanwhile some new countermeasures were considered in order to overcome the water environmental problems.
