The relation between the abundance of stink bugs and the occurrence of spotted rice, and the impact of mowing in the ridge between rice fields on stink bugs

The occurrence of spotted rice at harvest time and the number of stink bugs captured by sweeping in a paddy field were investigated from 2000 to 2002 to clarify the relation between the abundance of stink bugs. and the frequency of occurrence of spotted rice in Nagano Prefecture. Moreover, stink bugs were captured periodically using Malaise traps after mowing in the ridge between rice fields to clarify the impact of mowing on stink bugs. Results show a high positive correlation between the number of stink bugs captured by sweeping and the frequency of spotted rice (r = 0.773). The numbers of captured stink bugs and spotted rice were high in the early-ripening varieties of rice. In particular, Mochihikari, one of the early-ripening varieties, was very high, and also the coefficient of correlation (r = 0.869) showed a high positive correlation. The species captured most often by Malaise traps were Cletus punctiger (Dallas) and Trigonotylus ruficornis (Geoffroy). About 92% of individuals were captured within 2 weeks in the mown area, with 64% in the un-mown area. The numbers of captured stink bugs in the mown area was about 1/3 of the un-mown area.
